Jiraiya kills one of the Pains only to realise he’s fought him before. Shima leaves on Jiraiya’s request, as Jiraiya and Fukasaku go back out to fight Pain, where Jiraiya realizes that he has met all of them before. He learns Pain’s secret, but is stabbed by all five at once. Dying, he remembers how Naruto never once gave up and he writes a message on Fukasaku’s back. Pain attacks him again, and he drowns into the sea.
